General Information

Description - Route 4 in the Rangeley Lakes region lies in the western mountains of the State of Maine. The Appalachian Trail crosses the central portion of this designated Scenic Byway. This area has dramatic scenic quality with a number of turnouts that provide access to the Sandy River and various hiking trails along the corridor. White-water rafting and canoeing are popular recreational sports in this area.

Route 4 Scenic Byway begins at the intersection with Route 17 in the village of Oquossoc and continues easterly to Rangeley village. The byway follows Route 4 southeasterly past scenic Rangeley Lake and Long Pond before crossing the Appalachian Trail and running parallel to the Sandy River for several miles. The 19.6-mile long byway designation ends at the Madrid rest area.
