Description - The Schoodic Scenic Byway in northeastern Maine is one of the last frontiers on the eastern seaboard. This region has many protected public lands. This part of Maine remains unspoiled and represents the "real" Maine that residents want to preserve and visitors want to experience. Unlike other parts of the state that have been developed with intensive, tourism-oriented businesses, this byway passes through a landscape of lobstering, clamming, blueberry fields, timberland, and home-based entrepeneurship. Locally produced goods made by artisans and craftspeople are sold through small shops and yard sales. You can lodge at historic bed and breakfasts, cabins, and campgrounds. The scenery along the byway is unmatched as well. The route passes through villages and waterfronts, including Sullivan Harbor, Winter Harbor, Birch Harbor, and Prospect Harbor. In addition to 11 bodies of water, there are mountains, islands, fields of blueberry, and wildflowers, as well as ducks, eagles, osprey, historic buildings, and lighthouses.

Directions from : Take I-95 to Bangor, then go on I-395 east to Route 1A into Ellsworth. Take Route 1 east 8.4 miles through the town of Hancock to the Hancock-Sullivan Bridge. The Schoodic Scenic Byway begins at the west end of the bridge.
