Description - More commonly known as the "highway of waterfalls", the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway ascends deep into the Cascades. About 18 miles east of Roseburg the North Umpqua meets head-on with the Little River at Colliding Rivers, the only place in the world where this phenomenon occurs. The North Umpqua provides whitewater thrills and superb steel-head runs as it tumbles through the Umpqua National Forest. After passing more than a half dozen waterfalls, the Byway reaches sparkling Diamond Lake, a year round playground at the base of Mt. Thielsen. The paved, 11-mile path around the lake is one of the nicest family bike rides anywhere. From here, you're only moments away from Crater Lake's north entrance, which is usually open from June through October. In winter you can swing around Hwy. 230 and Hwy. 62 to the south entrance which is open year round.

The western portions of this region experience higher precipitation and more moderate temperatures year-round. The eastern end of this region is much more arid, with warmer summer temperatures and colder winter temperatures. The Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway is located in south western Oregon. This byway starts in Gold Hill and travels north through Union Creek and then heads west to Rosenburg. Directions: Starting in Roseburg, travel east on SR 138, passing through the towns of Glide and Idleyld Park, road enters the Umpqua National Forest. Turn south onto SR 230 through the town of Union Creek. Forest boundary ends a few miles past Union Creek. Road turns into SR 62 just before the town of Prospect. Continue southwest until reaching the town of Shady Cove. SR 62 turns into SR 234 just before Gold Hill, where the byway ends.
