Description - The Cherohala Skyway leads visitors over a gently winding pathway into the heart of historic Cherokee Indian ancestral territories. Magnificent and seldom-seen portions of the Southern Appalachian National Forests are easily accessible for the general population. The route contributes a unique opportunity to experience and learn about our cultural heritage in one of the most spectacular forest environments in the world. After 40 years of tireless efforts by hundreds of individuals and dozens of agencies, the Cherohala Skyway opened in October of 1996. The now famous annual Wagon Trains continually traversed this route to call attention to and gain support for the construction project. The Cherohala provides spectacular mile-high vistas and brilliant fall foliage. The route traverses two National Forests, and natural wonders abound. The immediate area surrounding the byway is also replete with historic and commercial offerings. A visitor can choose from among fishing, hunting, hiking, watching wildlife, whitewater rafting, and gold panning, as well as visiting museums, casinos, or Dollywood and Pigeon Forge music theaters and outlet malls.

Recreation - Scenic Driving. Climate - Tennessee has a temperate climate with short, mild winters. The average annual snowfall for the state is 12 inches. Spring comes in early March bringing flowering trees and shrubs, and warmer weather. Spring temperatures average between 45 and 70 degrees. Summer's full force arrives in the region by mid May, bringing warm weather and higher humidity. The mountains of eastern Tennessee are a great place to escape the hot summer temperatures as the higher elevation cools the air slightly. Cool fall temperatures bring crisp air and brilliant fall colors. Mid to late October is a good time to visit the region to experience the fall foliage. Location -

Directions from : To travel the byway, begin at Tellico Plains in Southeast Tennessee. Loop from Tellico Plains on TN Highway 165 over the Cherohala Skyway to Robbinsville, N.C., and then take U.S. Highways 19/74 to Cherokee, N.C. Next, take U.S. 441 through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and then follow U.S. 321 to Foothills Parkway. Finally, take U.S. 441 to Vonore, TN.
