General Information

Description - The Chincoteague Bay Route byway follows the Chincoteague Bay to the Virginia state line. The byway travels through the picturesque town of Snow Hill founded in 1686 as a commercial center for the lower shore of Maryland. While many of the colonial town's merchants carried on an active trade with England and Barbados, today Snow Hill is mainly a residential community of early Victorian architecture.

Travelling east on MD-365 to Public Landing, visitors will discover a 19th-century wagon route from Snow Hill to the bay. Public Landing offers a splendid view of Assateague Island National Seashore across the Chincoteague Bay as well as places for picnicking, swimming, fishing, and boating.

Returning to Snow Hill, follow MD-12 south through Girdletree and Stockton.

Attractions - The Chincoteague Bay Route is known for it's Natural, Recreational and Scenic Attractions.

Directions from : Begin in Snow Hill and drive five miles east on MD-365 to the Chincoteague Bay port of Public Landing. Return to Snow Hill and follow MD-12 south to Girdletree and Stockton. MD-12 continues south from Stockton to the Maryland-Virginia border to travel on Virginia Scenic Roads.
