Description - Black Butte Lake was formed in 1963 upon the completion of Black Butte Dam. Located on Stony Creek west of Orland, the lake is an inviting and accessible recreation area on the west side of the Sacramento Valley. When full, the lake has a surface area of 4,460 acres, is seven miles long and has a shoreline of 40 miles. The dam provides flood damage protection for local towns and agricultural lands.
Attractions
- Visitors to Black Butte Lake can enjoy an assortment of recreations. The park is open all year for day use and overnight camping. Day use of recreation areas is on a first-come, first-served basis. Campsites are available by reservation. There are two campgrounds, including group areas, at opposite ends of the lake. A 75-acre ATV area is open June through February on the north side of the lake. Powerboats, personal watercraft and sailboats will find ample room for water fun throughout the "v" shaped lake. Boat ramps ($) are located at several locations. Black Butte is well known throughout California as an excellent warm water fishery providing catches of crappie, largemouth and smallmouth bass, spotted bass, striped bass, channel catfish, and more. Recreation - A variety water sports, camping opportunities, day hikes, and picnic destinations await at Black Butte Lake. Climate - The climate of Black Butte Reservoir area is greatly influenced by elevation. As throughout California, most of the precipitation comes between November and April. This comes in the form of rain at the lower elevations and some wet, heavy snow in the higher elevations. April through October are normally dry, with warm to hot temperatures at the low elevations and moderate temperatures in the higher elevations. Location -
