General Information

Description - The Lakes Basin Recreation Area is well known for its scenic geological features of granitic ridges and glacially serrated rock outcroppings.

Recreation - The breathtaking scenery and surrounding crystal lakes provide the opportunity for a variety of year-round recreation activities. Camping, fishing, boating, hunting, picnicking, hiking, backpacking, swimming, and nature study can be enjoyed in the summer season. Snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are popular winter activities.

Climate - The Plumas generally experiences warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters. Weather can change rapidly during all seasons of the year. Elevation plays a major role in temperature and precipitation. This precipitation falls mainly from October through April. At higher elevations, it comes mostly in the form of snow. Clouds can build up during the summer to produce thunderstorm activity. It is wise to pack for any season with clothing that can be "layered", ready to peel off or add on as the thermometer dictates. Always include some kind of rain gear.

Location - The Lakes Basin Recreation Area is located in the southern region of the Beckwourth Ranger District, just southwest of Beckwourth.

Report: See also trip report for Long Lake trail. Horse trailer (3 trailers max) parking next to group camp-site. Need to be able to back up trailer to get it turned around, not easy, take smaller trailer. Bathrooms at group camp site. Have to ride horse 1/4 mile on paved road to trail heads (Big Bear, Long Lake). Marked well.

Beckwourth Ranger District - The Beckwourth Ranger District encompasses the eastern end of the Plumas National Forest in Northern California. The Beckwourth Ranger District has several reservoirs and lakes that provide many opportunities for recreation.
