General Information

Description - This community of 90,000 people has many historical, cultural and natural resources to offer locals and visitors. The area was settled by Chumash Indians, who later helped Spanish priests build the Mission Santa Barbara. Other attractions within the city include the Santa Barbara Botanical Gardens, which encompass 60 acres of land and three miles of nature trails. The Museum of Natural History contains exhibits illustrating the natural history of the region. It also maintains the Sea Center with a collection of live animals in a touch tank and other interactive exhibits.

Several natural areas have been preserved for public use around Santa Barbara. The University of California Santa Barbara occupies beach front property with great views and a lovely campus. Goleta Beach County Park is comprised of a half mile of sandy beach with access to a pier, picnic facilities, restrooms and bike paths. Leadbetter Beach and Park provides picnic facilities along the coast south of the city. West of the city lie the extensive lands of Los Padres National Forest.

Recreation - This region has such diverse land forms that it supports both water sports and mountain activities. In Santa Barbara individuals can enjoy fishing, swimming, walking, hiking, biking and camping.

Climate - This city receives mild weather throughout the year with temperatures averaging 70 degrees F. High summer temperatures reach into the low 80s with very little rainfall during July, August and September. Winter temperatures average between 40 and 70 degrees. Most of the rainfall for the region occurs during the months of November, December, January, February and March.

Location - Santa Barbara lies on the southern California coast north of Los Angeles and south of San Luis Obispo. The city exists in a natural amphitheater created by the highlands of the Santa Inez Mountains on the east and the Pacific Ocean on the west.
