General Information

Description - The Sherman Island Public Access Facility is surrounded on three sides by the Sacramento River and Mayberry Slough. A small levee road down the center of the island leads to this popular recreational site. The Sacramento is wide and slow here, and the Delta breezes blow fiercely across the tree-lined island. Sherman Island is a secluded place for boaters, windsurfers, anglers and watercraft enthusiasts to enjoy their sport or to end a hard day playing.

Attractions - Sherman Island has nearly always enjoyed a reputation as a popular take-out spot for large and small watercraft. Its proximity at the mouth of the Sacramento River delta makes it prime fishing habitat for salmon, steelhead, striped bass and sturgeon. Its location at the north end of the San Francisco Bay also provides strong, constant breezes from May to October, making Sherman Island one of the prime windsurfing sites in the nation. Windsurfing magazine calls Sherman Island an excellent spot for beginning, intermediate and advanced windsurfers to catch a breeze.

The park is open year-round from sunrise to sunset. Parking fees are collected 365 days a year. Self-payment is required if no fee collector is present.

Recreation - Boating, windsurfing, and fishing are favorite recreations at Sherman Island County Public Access.

Climate - A generally warm, dry climate prevails in the Central Valley; it is hot in the summer, mild in the winter. Precipitation in the region falls mainly from October through April. Winter temperatures tip well below freezing producing frost, however, snow is very rare. Summer temperatures above 100 degrees F are part of the normal pattern.

Location - To reach the public access park travel U.S. Highway 50 to the Interstate 5 south exit. At the intersection of I-5 and Highway 12, take the Highway 12 west. Then exit onto Highway 160, heading south. Turn right onto Sherman Island Road at the point where Highway 160 drops off the levee. Continue south on Sherman Island Road until it enters the park.
