Description - California offers an incredible breadth of winter sports experiences. Ski resorts range in size from a couple hundred acres to more than 4,000 acres. Standing on one of Los Angeles' palm tree-lined boulevards in winter, one can look up at a vista of 10,000-foot snow-covered peaks. Ride the flanks of one of the continent's largest volcanoes at Mt. Shasta, look out over one of the Sierra's deepest river canyons at Bear Valley, revel in the thrill of deep powder while overlooking spectacular Lake Tahoe. The possibilities go on and on.

- The State of California is home to spectacular mountains and world famous skiing and snowboarding. California has over 34 resorts, an average annual snowfall of over 350 inches and plenty of sunshine.
Recreation - California's Snow Resorts offer some of the best downhill skiing and snowboarding in the country. Many resorts also offer opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, sleigh rides, and ice skating. A number of resorts offer outstanding summer activities including hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Climate - California's mountain ranges cover a large geographic area so weather varies greatly from one area to the next. The higher mountains generally experience mild to warm, dry summers and cool to cold winters, with heavy snowfall. Sunshine is normally abundant, even during the winter months. Weather can change rapidly during all seasons of the year. Elevation plays a major role in temperature and precipitation. This precipitation falls mainly from October through April. At higher elevations, it comes mostly in the form of snow. A snowpack from 5-10 feet or more is usually present in the High Sierra from December to May at elevations above 6,500 feet. California has four distinct regions of snow resorts, the Southern California San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mountains, Mammoth Lakes in the Eastern Sierra, the Central Sierra resorts stretching north to Mt. Shasta, and the Lake Tahoe region including it's Nevada resorts.
