Description - Squaw Valley USA is one of the most talked about and sought after winter recreation destinations in the U.S. Site of the VIII Olympic Winter Games, it is a must visit destination for anyone that loves winter sports. An average of 450 inches of snow falls each winter, and the California sun shines three out of every four days.
Attractions
- 4,000 acres of world famous terrain, from the tamest to the toughest, offer something for skiers and snowboarders of all ages and abilities. Six mountain peaks, spacious open bowls, three terrain parks, 2 standard halfpipes, an enormous Superpipe, and miles of carefully groomed runs are easily and quickly accessed via a lift network of 33 lifts, including 7 express lifts, an aerial Cable Car and North America's only Funitel.
Recreation - From skiing and snowboarding on one of the top mountains in the world, to ice skating, snowtubing, rock climbing, and more, Squaw Valley offers a broad range of recreation possibilities. Off the slopes, guests enjoy mountain-top ice skating, snowtubing, the High Camp Swimming Lagoon & Spa (March - Sept.), shopping and restaurants all overlooking Lake Tahoe. On the lower mountain, activities include an indoor climbing wall, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, sleigh rides, dog sled tours and the Resort at Squaw Creek's relaxing health and fitness spa. Climate - Changeable weather conditions are common in the Lake Tahoe Basin throughout the year. Winter storms may occur from September through June, with heavy snow accumulations likely. Many of the ski resorts expect an average of over 450 inches of snow annually and can stay open until June. Sunny, summer skies may cloud over quickly with thundershowers, catching some people by surprise. Weather may also vary or change rapidly from lake-level (6,225 ft) to mountain peaks (10,880 ft). Squaw Valley USA is located 42 miles west of Reno, NV, 96 miles from Sacramento, and 196 miles from San Francisco via all-weather Interstate 80. The valley entrance (look for the Olympic Towers) is just 8 miles from Truckee and 6 miles from Tahoe City and the North Shore of Lake Tahoe, on Hwy 89.
Directions from Sacramento: Take Interstate 80 northeast into the Sierra Nevada. Exit at Truckee, onto Highway 89 SOUTH, towards Lake Tahoe/Tahoe City/Squaw Valley. Follow Highway 89 south 8 miles to the Squaw Valley Rd. Exit. Turn right and follow Squaw Valley Rd. to the base of the mountain.
Directions from Reno: Take Interstate 80 west into California and on to Truckee. (Approx 30 miles from Reno) Take the Highway 89 south Exit towards Lake Tahoe/Tahoe City/Squaw Valley. Follow Highway 89 south 8 miles to the Squaw Valley Rd. Exit. Turn right and follow Squaw Valley Rd. to the base of the mountain.
