The rocky coast of Gaviota State Park

Description - Gaviota State Park is a popular spot for swimming, picnicking and surf fishing. This section of the coast was first called "gaviota" (seagull) by soldiers of the Portola Expedition in 1769. A pier on the west end of the beach is used by divers and surfers. A Southern Pacific railroad trestle crosses the creek above the day-use parking lot.

Recreation - Visitors can explore the upland portions of the park from a trailhead in the parking area. Gaviota Peak offers a view of the coast and the Channel Islands.

Climate - Climate in the Central Coast varies greatly with elevation and the amount of coastal influence. Areas with more coastal influence experience moderate temperatures year round with fog likely from June through mid-August. Plan your coastal visit in the late summer or fall to ensure the best conditions for viewing the scenery. Also, occasional clear days between winter and spring storms are incomparable. Areas further inland experience greater temperature extremes, with relatively cooler winters and hot summers. Inland areas often receive frost on winter nights. As throughout most of California most of the precipitation comes in the winter months, with April through October normally very dry.

Location - The park is located 33 miles west of Santa Barbara on U.S. 101.

Report: Frequently visited this park during summertime while growing up. Yes. The nights prove very windy. The road entering the park is easy to pass.....but, once inside the park, it makes for a great day at the beach, whether you just want to catch a tan, comb the shore for shells and sand crabs, or swim. The pier provides an active, awesome day of fishing. I was almost not going to share this with you, as I know it as my personal get away place.....enjoy.

Report: I went with friends on a fishing trip, the days were nice, but the nights had strong winds, I am from the high desert and didnt plan for the change of weather, The park rangers are great and very helpful, The other campers were very nice and friendly. I would go here again for another trip, but would go in a trailer, I felt sorry for the tent campers, as they didnt get much sleep as the wind blew all night long.
