Robert Louis Stevenson State Park
|
Description
- Robert Louis Stevenson State Park is the place where the famous author of Treasure Island and Kidnapped spent his honeymoon in 1880. The area features rough terrain, with evergreen forests in the canyons on north-facing slopes and chaparral on the south-facing slopes.
Recreation - There is a five-mile hike to the top of Mt. St. Helena from which one can see much of the Bay Area. On good days the top of Mt. Shasta can be seen, 192 miles in the distance. Nothing remains of Stevensons cabin, but the site is identified on the trail to the summit. Climate - Summers are generally mild. Fog is often encountered near the coastline, with sunny, warmer weather more common inland in the foothills. Winters are generally cool with considerable precipitation. Wear layers of clothing to accommodate cool to warm temperatures and good walking shoes. Rain protection should be included at any time of year. The best seasons are spring and fall. The winter provides the best vistas, but also the greatest chance of snow and chilling wind. Location -
The park is seven miles north of Calistoga on Highway 29.
