Description - Eight miles northwest of Nevada City on Highway 49, the South Yuba River State Park is a major State Park in the making.

Attractions - Eight miles northwest of Nevada City on Highway 49, the South Yuba River State Park is a major State Park in the making. The park will stretch more than 20 miles along the South Yuba River canyon from Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park to Bridgeport.

Recreation - The area includes the longest single-span covered bridge in the world; four miles of the steep, rugged canyon of the South Yuba River; and the Independence Trail, a wheelchair accessible trail. Visitors can enjoy swimming and hiking, wildflowers and historic sites. Docent-led history, nature and gold-panning tours are offered at selected times throughout the year.

Independence Trail - an adapted aqueduct (called flumes by the miners) that carries wheelchairs and hikers across the Independence Trail gorges. The trail is a joint project of the California Department of Parks and Recreation, the Sequoya Challenge (a Nevada County United Way Agency), and numerous individual and group volunteers.

The trail features waterfalls, scenic vistas, and a gentle switchback descent to a mountain stream. There are restrooms with full wheelchair access at several points along the trail. For more information contact the Sequoya Challenge, P.O. Box 3166, Grass Valley, CA 95945. Phone (916) 265-9398 for information or group reservations. The trail can become muddy and impassable for wheelchairs in winter and spring so call ahead if the weather has been wet.

Climate - Gold County generally experiences warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters. Weather can change rapidly during all seasons of the year. Elevation plays a major role in temperature and precipitation. This precipitation falls mainly from October through April. At higher elevations, it comes mostly in the form of snow. Clouds can build up during the summer to produce thunderstorm activity. It is wise to pack for any season with clothing that can be "layered", ready to peel off or add on as the thermometer dictates. Always include some kind of rain gear.

Location - The park is located off Highway 49, five miles north of Nevada City.
