- Fort Collins is bordered to the west by the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and Roosevelt National Forest. To the east of this community lies the great plains and rolling hills of Colorado's agricultural belt. Fort Collins is situated at an elevation of 5,004 feet above sea level and supports a population of 95,000. The Cache la Poudre River flows through the city.There are many venues around the city that apply themselves to outdoor recreation. Several city parks large and small may be located around the city, as well as over sixty miles of bike paths. Horsetooth Reservoir and Mountain Park lie southwest of Fort Collins and support a vast array of outdoor activities. Lory State Park lies on the northwest shore of Horsetooth Reservoir. It provides access to year-round recreation opportunities.
Recreation - Recreational opportunities in every season are bountiful in and around Fort Collins. Fun may be had on city, state and national public lands in the region. A sampling of recreational opportunities include the following: cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, backcountry touring, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, road biking, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, rafting, hunting, fishing and rock climbing. Climate - Fort Collins lies at an elevation of 5,004 feet. Its residents enjoy a moderate, four-season climate. Because of its location along the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Fort Collins is buffered from the extremes of both summer and winter weather. Warm, dry days and mild nights are common in Fort Collins. The average annual precipitation in the city is only 14 inches, with 51 inches of snow in an average winter. Colder temperatures and higher precipitation can be expected as one climbs higher into the foothills and mountains to the west of the city. Location -
Fort Collins is situated at the eastern base of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, approximately 65 miles north of Denver and 45 miles south of Cheyenne, Wyoming. The Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, the Colorado State Forest, and Rocky Mountain National Park all lie to the west of Fort Collins. Several Colorado State Parks and Larimer County Parks surround the city. The Cache la Poudre River flows through the city and several lakes, natural and man-made, lie within the region.
