General Information

Description - Lake City is surrounded by the Gunnison (east), Uncompahgre (north and west) and Rio Grande (south) National Forests. Within these forests and in close proximity to Lake City lies the La Garita Wilderness, Powderhorn Wilderness and Uncompahgre Wilderness Areas. In addition to these attractions visitors to the region should visit Lake San Cristobal, the Slumgullion Earth Flow and the Packer Victim Memorial site. These sites will provide some geological and historical context for the region. Two scenic byways use Highway 149, which leads through Lake City, to complete their paths.

Recreation - The mountainous region and various lakes and rivers provide a plethora of recreation opportunities for visitors and locals in Lake City. During the summer months hiking, mountain and road biking, camping, four-wheel driving and fishing are very popular activities. Winter is usually less hectic, due to the difficulty found in reaching Lake City. Those who do come to the region during the winter months will enjoy ice skating, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, cross-country and backcountry skiing.

Climate - Lake City's climate is generally cool but pleasant. During the summer months temperatures may reach the mid 80s but rarely higher. Nights are usually cool and begin dipping near freezing in late August. Winter weather can be very cold with nighttime temperatures often reaching negative digits. The air is very dry producing lightweight snow and few overcast days. This makes the cold temperatures very pleasant with clear, sun-filled skies the norm in every season.

Location - Lake City is located in the southwestern region of Colorado. Highway 149 is the main thoroughfare in the area. It connects Lake City to Creede, to the south, and Curecanti National Recreation Area, to the north. The Lake Fork of the Gunnison River flows northward through town on the way to join the waters of Blue Mesa Reservoir. Other natural features in the area include the San Juan Mountains and the Continental Divide, which lie a short distance south of Lake City.
