General Information

Description - Lake Estes, a feature of the Colorado-Big Thompson Project, is formed by Olympus Dam constructed across the Big Thompson River. The afterbay storage in Lake Estes and the forebay storage in Marys Lake enable the Estes powerplant to meet daily variations in energy demand.

Attractions - Facilities include a nine-hole golf course, five picnic and associated day-use areas, and a marina. Good access to recreation areas. Water surface available for recreation is 185 surface acres. Power boating is limited, but available. Sailing opportunities. Fish species available are largely rainbow trout. Facilities are closed in winter due to ice and snow.

Recreation - Recreational opportunities include Biking, Boating, Camping, Fishing, Hiking, Horseback Riding, Picnicking,Recreational Vehicles, and Wildlife Viewing

Climate - The climate in Colorado varies tremendously from hot dusty summer days to frigidly cold winter nights. Colorado is known for its thunderstorms which form over the Rocky Mountains and then head across the eastern plains, often reaching 10,000 feet or more in height. Lightning is a serious threat, particularly on mountain peaks, lakes and open fields. Summertime temperatures routinely reach 90 to 100 degrees on the plains and the 70 - 80 degrees in the mountains. Cool weather is always possible at night throughout Colorado, particularly at higher elevations. It is not uncommon to need both shorts and a jacket on the same day.

Location - Site is about 2 miles east of Estes Park, Colorado. A map is available above on this wildernet.com page.

Report: My girlfriend and I went to the lake to fish on 4-12-04. the weather was a little cold and windy but we managed to catch 7 nice sized Trout just off the point behind the marina. There is a picnic table to eat lunch and a paved path to walk around the lake. it's a nice place to fish, hang out for the day or watch to Elk drink from the lake feet from you. If you want to catch Walleye or Tiger Muskie stay to the west end of the lake in the shallow water, although word from locals is that if you have a boat fish by the dam (east end) for walleye. I have an inflatable 7'pontoon boat. It was fun, water on the west end was clear to the bottom around 7 feet. All in all a nice place to fish.
