Green Mountain Reservoir Overlook

Description - The Green Mountain Reservoir Recreation Area surrounds Green Mountain Reservoir, 15 miles north of Silverthorne. The reservoir is located on the Blue River at an elevation of 8,000 feet. Water surface for fishing is approximately 2,125 acres.
Attractions
- There are seven campgrounds surrounding the reservoir, with varying levels of facilities. In general, the campgrounds are not highly developed. There is a boat ramp at McDonald Flats and a privately operated marina in the town of Heeney. There are numerous hiking trails in the area, mostly off the southwest side of the reservoir, leading up toward the Gore Range.
Recreation - The reservoir itself offers a full range of water activities including power boating, sail boarding, canoeing and fishing. The Blue River also provides excellent fishing. Primary sport fish available are brown trout, rainbow trout, and salmon. Campgrounds are closed in winter due to snow. Climate - Green Mountain Reservoir lies at the lowest elevations of the Dillon Ranger District but is still at 8,000 feet. Vegetation in the area includes sagebrush meadows at lower elevations, aspen and lodgepole pine at intermediate elevations, Engelmann spruce/subalpine fir forests above about 10,000 feet and alpine tundra at the highest elevations. At the lowest elevations, around Green Mountain Reservoir, summer high temperatures extend into the low 80s but evenings temperatures that can often dip into the 30s. Winter lows occasionally dip to minus 35 degrees, though daytime temperatures are often in the 20s. The relative humidity is quite low throughout the year. Much of the annual precipitation comes in the form of winter snow but afternoon summer thunderstorms are common. Location -
Green Mountain Reservoir lies between Silverthorne and Kremmling, on the Blue River, along Colorado Highway 9. To reach the reservoir from I-70 and Silverthorne, follow Highway 9 north about 15 miles.
Directions from Silverthorne: Follow Highway 9 north of Silverthorne 14 miles. Turn left onto FDR 30 to go around the west side of Green Mountain Reservoir or continue on Highway 9 to travel around the east side of the reservoir.
Directions from Beaver Creek: Travel 38 miles east on I-70 to Silverthorne. Go 14 miles north on Hwy. 9. Turn left onto FDR 30 to go around the west side of Green Mountain Reservoir or continue on Highway 9 to travel around the east side of the reservoir.
Directions from Vail: Travel 29 miles east on I-70 to Silverthorne. Go 14 miles north on Hwy. 9. Turn left onto FDR 30 to go around the west side of Green Mountain Reservoir or continue on Highway 9 to travel around the east side of the reservoir.
