General Information

Description - Montrose is a crossroads town where Highways 50 and 550 intersect. It is a good place to refuel and buy groceries for backpacking, camping, float trip, etc. The Ute Indian Museum is located south of town and immediately west of Highway 550 on Chipeta Drive. The site is funded by the Colorado Historical Society and offers interpretive exhibits about Ute Culture and the settlement of the Uncompahgre River Valley.

Recreation - The Grand Junction Ranger District of the Uncompahgre National Forest lies to the west of Montrose. In the section closest to town you'll find ample opportunities for four-wheel driving and motorcycle riding. An indoor-outdoor aquatic center and an 18-hole golf course can be found in Montrose.

Climate - Located near the Uncompahgre River, Montrose sits in a large semiarid valley. Light snow in the winter makes Montrose an ideal place to land if you are flying to Telluride. Moderate summer temperatures, make this farming community much more pleasant than Grand Junction during summer heat waves.

Location - Montrose lies in the Uncompahgre River Valley approximately 20 miles southeast of Delta and 50 miles northwest of Ouray. It is located at the Junction of U.S. Highways 50 and 550, and is considered a gateway to southern and western Colorado. Many people use the region as an access point for the Gunnison and Uncompahgre National Forests, as well as for popular sites like the Black Canyon of the Gunnison River and the town of Telluride.
