Description - The Colorado Trail extends 500 miles from Denver to Durango. It is jointly administered by the Colorado Trail Foundation and the U.S. Forest Service. The trail traverses seven National Forests, six Wilderness areas, five major river systems and penetrates eight Colorado mountain ranges through some of the most beautiful terrain in the state.

Recreation - The trail is open to hikers and horseback riders for 500 miles. Some segments of the Colorado Trail are closed to mountain bikes due to wilderness designation. Detours for mountain bikers,using mainly county roads, forest roads and highways are available on this site. Climate - The weather in the Rocky Mountains changes by the hour. Users of the trail must be prepared for varying temperatures and precipitation in all forms. Summer temperatures can change from 80 degrees to 50 degrees rapidly. The elevation of the trail varies considerably, which also has an effect on the climate. It passes through three life zones varying from 5,280 feet near Denver to 13,000 feet at Silver Mesa near Durango. Keep in mind that for every 1,000 feet you climb the temperature drops by four degrees. Location -
