General Information

Description - Wilderness On Wheels Foundation was established as a not-for-profit corporation in March of 1986 to provide access for disabled persons to the natural outdoor environment. W.O.W. is supported entirely by donations and has no paid administrative staff.

Through the hard work of volunteers W.O.W. has constructed a model wilderness-access facility. The facility includes campsites, cabins, and a 8-foot wide boardwalk that is just over a mile long. The ultimate goal is complete the boardwalk that starts at 9,100 feet so it reaches the top of a 12,300 foot mountain!

Attractions - BOARDWALK: Chart your course over an 8-foot wide boardwalk. It closely follows the bank of a rocky mountain trout stream. Explore wetland tundra. Turning toward a 12,300 foot mountain peak, the boardwalk begins a gentle climb through lush forests.

PICNIC TABLES: Picnic tables blend discreetly into the environment. It's pristine territory, but it has been made accessible for everyone.

CAMPING AREA: Pitch your tent on a deck elevated to the height of the seat of a wheelchair. The camping area is a completely accessible natural environment. Pack out what you pack in.

FISHING: An 8-foot wide boardwalk closely follows the bank of a meandering trout stream. Small rock dams amplify the sound of falling water. Lively brook trout can be seen darting from shallow pools to underwater caverns. Upstream, a spring-fed pond, stocked with rainbow trout, offers excitement for all anglers. Here, disabled and senior citizens alike are included for fishing fun!

WILDLIFE VIEWING: At an elevation of over 9,000 feet, abundant wildlife inhabit the territory. Deer, elk, and fox are occasionally sighted. Stellar Jays, Mountain Blue Birds, Raven and Pine Siskins are among the many birds.

Recreation - Wilderness on Wheels offers wheelchair accessible hiking, picnicking, camping, fishing and wildlife viewing.

Climate - W.O.W. is located at over 9,000 feet and therefore experiences cold, snowy winters and mild summers. Summer evenings can be quite cool, with temperatures dipping into the 30's. Temperatures cool off rapidly when the sun isn't shining. When the sun is shining be sure to wear protection, because the air is thinner and filters fewer harmful UV rays. At this elevation the weather can change quickly. Be prepared for dramatic changes in temperature and all varieties of precipitation.

Location - W.O.W. is located on U.S. Hwy. 285 sixty miles southwest of Denver. Take highway 285 west to Grant, Colorado. W.O.W. is 3.8 miles west of Grant, Colorado.

Directions from Denver: W.O.W. is located on U.S. Hwy 285 sixty miles southwest of Denver. Take highway 285 west to Grant, Colorardo. W.O.W. is 3.8 miles west of Grant, Colorado.

Report: We attempted to take my father in law to Wilderness on Wheels on Father's Day, but we brought our dog (and a leash). NO DOGS ALLOWED. No exceptions. That should be included on your website. It was highly disappointing for our entire family.
