General Information

Lums Pond State Park

Lums Pond State Park
Description - Lums Pond State Park is built around the largest freshwater pond in Delaware. The park features excellent fishing, sports facilities, hiking trails and more on its 1,757 acres on the north side of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. Covering 200 acres, Lums Pond itself offers a sandy swimming beach, and boat rentals provide water-bound recreation in the summer months. Before the pond existed, St. Georges Creek flowed through the hardwood forest and was the site of several Native American hunting camps. The creek was dammed in the early 1800s when the C & D canal was built. Water from the pond was used to fill the locks of the canal and power a small mill.

Attractions - Outdoor activities, including trail use, abound at Lums Pond State Park. Lums features over 10 miles of multi-purpose trails (horses, bikes, hikers, and snowmobiles) and special arrangements can be made for horse camping (call ahead for details, space is limited). Hikers have the opportunity to explore a variety of habitats along the 7.5-mile Swamp Forest Trail circling the pond. Discover the forest in a unique way on the Sensory Trail, which encourages the use of senses other than sight.

The Whale Wallow Nature Center hosts a variety of programs for visitors during the summer season. It is open daily from noon to 6 PM from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

For outdoor dining, picnic areas are scattered throughout the park, and three pavilions can be reserved for larger groups.

Ball fields and game courts are popular recreations at the park. Choose friendly competition in baseball, softball, football, soccer, tennis, basketball, volleyball or badminton. Sharpen your skill in horseshoes, shuffleboard, or disc golf. Equipment rentals are available during the summer season. Children can work off their excess energy on the playground.

While visiting Lum's Pond State Park, stop by The Nature Store, located in the park office. There you'll find T-shirts, hats, sweatshirts and books related to gardening, fishing and camping, as well as a wide assortment of children's books and toys for younger park patrons. Picture frames, birdhouses, trays and garden stepping stones are just a few examples of the many gifts that can be found in the shop. Hours: 8 AM - 4 PM

With the pond being the major focus of the park, water sports reigns at Lums. Sailboats, rowboats, canoes, kayaks and pedal boats are available for rent. Whether you rent a boat or bring your own, Lums offers some of the best freshwater fishing in the state. Anglers can chase largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish, or pickerel. Striped bass is stocked periodically, offering fisherman yet another challenge. Several youth fishing tournaments are held yearly. A boat launching ramp and two piers allow easy access to the water.

The campground features 68 shaded sites with picnic tables, grills and nearby restrooms. Several sites offer electric hookup. The park also has a new addition, yurts, which means Mongolian tents. This is actually a luxurious way to camp. The sturdy units are slightly off the ground, have canvass sides, include beds, futon, electric, and outdoor deck. Water and grills accompaniments are like those found at standard campsites.

Recreation - With Lums Pond State Park resting on the shores of Delaware's largest freshwater pond, the park features excellent fishing, camping, multi-use trails, boating, swimming, nature study, picnicking, game fields, disc golf and more.

Climate - The Chesapeake and Delaware Bays moderate Delaware's climate. The state experiences four distinct seasons. Winter can be bitterly cold. Highs during this season average near freezing with low temperatures near 0 degrees F. Spring comes to this region in mid to late March. This is a pleasant time to visit with moderate temperatures and low humidity. Summer brings temperatures ranging from 80 to 90 degrees F. Humidity is highest inland with ocean breezes cooling the shoreline. Fall brings cooler temperatures and low humidity. The forested regions of the state often have brilliant foliage displays.

Location - Lums Pond State Park is located two miles south of Glasgow off Delaware Route 896. The main entrance is on Howell School Road. The campground entrance is on Route 71.
