General Information

Description - The Blackwater Heritage State Trail is the site of an abandoned railroad, formerly the Florida and Alabama Railroad. It was built in the early 1900s for the Bagdad Lumber and Land Company. In 1939, the lumber mill closed and the railroad was retired until World War II. It then became the route supplying Whiting Field Naval Air Station.

Attractions - The Blackwater Heritage State Trail is an easy route between the town of Milton and the Whiting Field Naval Air Station, which is located north of town. The trail was acquired from the National Park Service in 1993 and will be part of a link with the proposed Old Spanish Trail. Hikers and bikers use the paved route while horseback riders use the parallel dirt path. It travels approximately 8 miles bypassing open field and wetlands where white-tailed deer roam and wading birds stand statuesque. This rural route offers glimpses of Florida's rare and endangered white-topped pitcher plant.

Recreation - Recreation activities include hiking, horseback riding, biking and wildlife viewing.

Climate - The panhandle area of Florida experiences mild, comfortable winters and warm to hot, humid summers. The average summer temperatures reach well above 83 degrees Fahrenheit (above 29 Celsius). Winters are mild with temperatures averaging below 52 degrees Fahrenheit (below 11 Celsius). The average precipitation for the panhandle area is more than 60 inches per year. August and September are peak months of the hurricane season that lasts from June 1 through November 30.

Location - There are two trailheads for the trail. Southern Trailhead: Located south of the heart of Milton where Route 87 and U.S. Highway 90 join. Northern Trailhead: Next to the eastern gate of Whiting Field Naval Air Station, Route 87-A.
