Hillsborough River State Park
Description - Encompassing nearly 3,500 acres, Hillsborough River State Park was one of Florida's original public-use sites. The Civilian Conservation Corp was instrumental in developing this lovely riverfront park. Their works included fireplaces, stone benches, stone tables and even stone pavilions that still usable today. At one time, folks swam in the Hillsborough River, but pollutants warranted the parks system to build a concrete pool in the 1970s. Other developments include a bathhouse, boardwalks, suspension bridge, stationary bridge, and a large recreation hall with full-service meeting and reception facilities.

The park amenities were built around the 2-mile loop park road. Upon entering the park and traveling the one-way road, you'll come upon the museum, rapids overlook, youth campground access, swimming pool, and finally the large multi-loop campground.

Attractions - Hillsborough River State Park has such a diverse assortment of recreation opportunities that everyone finds something they like. As part of the park system, Fort Foster Historic Site and a small Seminole War museum hold special events throughout the year in addition to their tours giving visitors a glimpse of life during the 1800s.

Hillsborough River offers a wonderful large swimming pool with hours vary slightly from the uniform 8 A.M. to sunset hours set by the Florida State Parks System. Multi-use trails for hikers and bikers provide half-day excursions. Development is underway for horse trails and a horse camp.

The campground is large, offering over 100 full-service sites. Florida's only class II rapids may be observed from an ADA overlook. Swinging bridges and boardwalks not only provide a functional purpose but also add beauty to the park's lush hardwood and riverfront environment. Anglers regularly pull largemouth bass and bream from the river. Wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy catching glimpses of river otters, bobcat, fox, raccoons, alligators, armadillos, and even feral hogs.

Recreation - Visitors to Hillsborough River State Park will find a diverse menu of recreations including access to the 54-mile Hillsborough River Canoe Trail. A large full-service campground, a large swimming pool, hiking and mountain bike trails and soon-to-be, horse trails with overnight accommodations for horses. Boardwalks and bridges provide access over wetlands and waterways. Dining outdoors, wildlife viewing and relaxing come naturally.

Climate - Winters in west central Florida are normally mild with occasional temperatures dipping into the 30's and 40's Fahrenheit. However, averages range between 52 and 64 degrees Fahrenheit (11 - 18 Celsius). Summers are normally hot and muggy with temperatures and humidity usually exceeding 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Averages range between 81 and 83 degrees (27 - 29 Celsius). Precipitation for the central west area ranges between 52 and 56 inches per year.

Location - Hillsborough River State Park is located on U.S. Highway 301, 12 miles north of Tampa.

Report: Chose this as our jumping-off place to visit Tampa RV Supershow and LazyDays RV Show. Both an easy 10 minute ride from campground. We stayed in the 'pet' loop--people there very friendly, grounds clean and well-maintained. Nice large, reasonably-level, shady lots-liked it better than the 'no pets' loop! We will return to this park if we are back in the vicinity.
