Silver River State Park
Description - Easy to find and quick to access, Silver River State Park is a work in progress. The park was recently acquired by the Florida State Park System and today offers 5,000 acres of 14 distinct plant communities and nearly 10 miles of river frontage. The actual Silver Springs, a nearby attraction, is the headwater of Silver River, which flows into Oklawaha River and eventually the St. Johns River.

Attractions - This lovely new park offers folks of all ages a rewarding and relaxing outdoor experience. There are miles of trails, several overnight camping options, educational pursuits, and a peaceful large grassy area conducive for tossing down a blanket and enjoying an old-fashioned picnic. One of the most popular features of the park is the Silver River Museum and Education Center along with the Cracker Village. The operation of these facilities is the joint venture between the Florida State Parks System and the Marion County School System. School children from across the state visit in large numbers for a "hands on" environmental education experience. The facility is open to the public on weekends and holidays from 9 AM - 5 PM.

In addition, the park is home to the largest youth group campground facility offered by Florida State Parks. The site is located slightly north of the park entrance along County Route 35. Over 500 people can be accommodated. Call the park office for a warm welcome and the necessary details.

Recreation - Hiking, biking, camping, viewing exhibits, and partaking in special events are the primary recreations enjoyed at this new acquisition site. The special events include demonstrations and activities such as quilting, folk tales, blacksmithing, hayrides, antique engines, museum tours, antique automobiles, pony rides, Indian camp, Native American crafts, confederate encampment, and woodcarving. As of fall 2001, 6 cabins will be available for reservation. Other future plans include more trails and a full-service concession offering food, drinks, camping supplies along with canoe rental.

Climate - Florida experiences mild, comfortable winters and warm to hot, humid summers. Summer Fahrenheit temperatures average in the mid to high 80's (28 - 29 Celsius). Winters are mild and dry with temperatures averaging 58 - 64 degrees Fahrenheit (14 - 18 Celsius). Precipitation for the central area averages anywhere from 56 inches to less than 52 inches per year. The region offers a great warm escape for outdoor recreation during the cold northern months. August and September are peak months of the hurricane season that lasts from June 1 through November 30.

Location - Silver River State Park is located one mile south of State Route 40 on County Route 35 east of Ocala. The youth campground is located north of the park entrance on CR 35.

Report: My family and I day tripped to Silver River State Park over the Labor Day weekend. We were camping at Lake Pannasofkee and decided to drive to the Ocala area and check out the park. We hiked from the museum parking lot to the river - nice grass trail (a bit wet from rain so there was a little mud). If you portage your canoe/kayak to the river I'd recommend some wheels. I've build a canoe carrier based on one I saw at the Silver River - PVC and a couple of wheel-barrow tires did the trick. The guy with the canoe and carrier I saw helped out two fellows by carrying their canoe along with his back to the parking lot. The cabins are looking real good but we RV camp and would use the campground. Nice sites with some shade. I'm looking forward to spending some time in this park in the near future. Proximity to Silver Springs and their water park enhances the potential of this state park.
