General Information

Description - Hawaii offers one designated scenic byway, Chain of Craters Road. The road lies within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It is designated as a parkway by the National Park Service and is nominated for All-American Road designation. The road connects and provides visitor access to a series of volcanic features including craters, active and dormant lava flows, and scenic views of tropical rain forests, mountains, wilderness areas, and seacoast areas.

Recreation - Chain of Craters Road provides access to cultural, historical, natural, recreational and scenic sites. Some of the most popular activities along the byway include hiking, camping, picnicking, biking, photographing scenery and of course, scenic driving.

Climate - The climate is pleasantly mild on these islands throughout the year. Temperatures vary annually between 60 and 90 degrees F. Summer temperatures range from 68 to 82 degrees F with the water usually near 80 degrees. Winter temperatures vary from 61 to 80 degrees F with the water temperature close to 77 degrees. More rainfall occurs during the winter than other seasons of the year.

Location - Chain of Craters Road is located within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii.
