- Idaho offers close to 20 state, National Forest and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) designated scenic, historic and backcountry byways. These byways travel through Idaho's diverse geography and lead to historic sites. The Hells Canyon Scenic Byway winds its way along the east side of this massive rift that separates Idaho from its neighbor, Oregon. The Lake Coeur d'Alene Scenic Byway travels an area where the lakes, mountains, and beautiful summer weather have made it one of the most famous summer playgrounds in the Northwest. The Sawtooth Scenic Byway takes you along the Sawtooth Mountains- the heart of the Idaho Rockies. As you travel the Lewis and Clark Back Country Byway, you'll see where the Lewis and Clark expedition unfurled the flag of the United States for the first time west of the Rocky Mountains, as well as spectacular vistas of the Lemhi Pass, Salmon River, Rocky and Lost River mountain ranges, rolling sagebrush and alpine meadows, wildlife, and carpets of wildflowers.
Recreation - Byways provide access to numerous cultural, historical, natural, recreational and scenic sites. Some of the most popular activities along the byways include hiking, camping, picnicking, biking, fishing, photographing scenery, viewing historic sites and of course scenic driving. Climate - The climate in Idaho varies with the elevation. The bottom of Hell's Canyon, Boise and other locations at low elevations receive hot summer weather. Temperatures at these elevations often reach 90 degrees F or more during the summer months. At the same time the mountains will get mild temperatures with cool nights. Winters are just as extreme with the mountains experiencing extreme conditions and temperatures. An average of 500 inches of snow falls on the Idaho highlands. Temperatures are known to dip below zero degrees F on many winter nights. The lower elevations enjoy a more mild winter season with less precipitation than the mountains.
