Shakamak State Park
Description - Shakamak offers various facilities to make the visitor’s stay an enjoyable experience. Picnickers have their choice of several picnic areas. Shelters and fireplaces are located in different areas of the park, with comfort stations and playgrounds nearby. The wildlife that inhabits Shakamak includes a variety of species adapted to life in the forest and water. Mammals such as white-tailed deer, raccoon, fox squirrel, and red fox are commonly seen by the park visitors along with various birds such as cardinals, nuthatches, bluejays, redheaded woodpeckers an an abundance of waterfowl.

Attractions - Shakamak is well known for “good fishing” and offers three (3) lakes totaling over 400 acres of water for the anglers to try their luck. Each lake is easily accessible with a boat launch and boat rental is available on all three lakes. A pool/slide located near Lake Shakamak provides swimmers and sunbathers an excellent waterfront. The pool is open from the Saturday before Memorial Day through Labor Day and is staffed with qualified lifeguards. Swimming is allowed only at the pool and only when lifeguards are on duty. A large group camp with dorms, showerhouse, kitchen and dining facilities is available for groups under adult supervision. There are 12 group camp cottages available August to March. Reservations are available through the Central Reservation System. Family cabins equipped with electric range, refrigerator, showers, modern restrooms, beds and wood burning stoves are available from Spring to Fall, dates will vary. There are 21 cabins that sleep six, one cabin that sleep four. During the off season cabins may be rented a minimum of two nights. During peak season cabins may be rented a minimum of seven nights. There are some cabins that are available year-round. For more information regarding cabin reservations use the Central Reservation System by going online or call the toll free number.

Recreation - Recreational opportunities at Shakamak State Park can enjoy; boating, camping, fishing, hiking and picnicking. This park also offers a group camp, family cabins, rent-a-camp, tennis courts and a swimming pool. About two-thirds of the campsites are in a wooded area, offering cool shade in the summer and beautiful fall colors in autumn.

Climate - Visitors to this state can expect hot and humid summer days that often reach 90 degrees F in July and August. Summer nights bring little relief with an average temperature of 70. Winter can be extremely cold in this Midwestern state with a yearly average of 40 inches of snow and low temperatures dipping to negative 15 degrees F. Winter daytime highs average close to 40 degrees. Spring and fall are excellent times to visit Indiana spring brings blooming wildflowers and daytime highs of 65 degrees F. With falls mild temperatures the leaves in the forested southern regions of the state change to brilliant hues.

Location - Located near Jasonville off of Indiana 48. From Indianapolis take I-70 west and turn south on 59, stay on 59 until Jasonville then take Indiana 48 west until you reach the park. Shakamak State Park is about an hour an a half from Indianapolis.
