- Kansas offers four state designated scenic byways: Flint Hills, Frontier Military, Gypsum Hills and Post Rock.
The Flint Hills Scenic Byway shows off the panoramic vistas of the tallgrass prairie. Historic sites abound in Council Grove from the Kaw Mission and the Last Chance Store. Frontier Military Scenic Byway approximates the old military trail used by the Army to transport troops and supplies between the frontier forts. Post Rock Scenid Byway is named for the unique native limestone rocks used for fenceposts in the area. The byway offers scenic, recreational, geological and agricultural viewing opportunities. Gypsum Hills Scenid Byway, in south central Kansas runs through red hills noted for their picturesque beauty and unique landscape.
Recreation - Byways provide access to numerous cultural, historical, natural, recreational and scenic sites. Some of the most popular activities along the byways include hiking, camping, picnicking, biking, fishing, photographing scenery, viewing historic sites and of course scenic driving.
