General Information

Description - Pilgrim Memorial State Park is one of the most heavily visited parks in the state parks system. Nearly one million people a year come from all over the world to visit the town where in 1620 Europeans first made a home in New England and to see Plymouth Rock. This simple glacial erratic boulder on the shore of Plymouth Harbor has become a world famous symbol of the courage and faith of the men and women who founded the first New England colony. A landscaped waterfront park provides scenic views of Plymouth Harbor. The Mayflower II, a replica of the ship that brought the first Pilgrims to Massachusetts, is anchored at the park.

Attractions - Forefaters' Monument is an 11 acre site that is a feature of Pilgrim Memorial State Park. It is home to an impressive 81 foot, granite monument that memorializes a Victorian era interpretation of the pursuits that motivated the Pilgrims to leave England and start their own colony. Open April through November.

Recreation - Pilgrim Memorial State Park is a historic site that offers interpretive programs and scenery viewing.

Climate - Massachusetts experiences four distinct seasons with slightly varying temperatures in the inland and coastal regions. Along the coast the water is a moderating factor that often prevents large amounts of snowfall from accumulating through the winter. Summer temperatures are usually cooler than low lying inland areas, due to ocean breezes. This region of the country experiences high humidity in the summer season and temperatures that average close to 80 degrees F. Fall and Spring are pleasant times to visit the region with crisp air and low humidity. Brilliant foliage colors can be found in the central and western regions of the state in late September and October. Winter temperatures can be brutally cold on occasion with a humidity-filled wind, but on average winter daytime temperatures reach 35 degrees F and lows reach into the teens. Spring is usually the wettest time of year, but trees, bushes and flowers are blooming by early May.

Location - Pilgrim Memorial State Park is located in southeastern Massachusetts. From north or south: Rte. 3 to Rte. 44 (Plymouth). Follow 44 east to waterfront. The Forefathers' Monument is a one mile walk from the park. If you are driving, go right (north) along waterfront to Rte. 44. At lights go straight for about 200 yards, then take a right onto Allerton Street. Forefathers Monument is at the top of the hill approx. 100 yards on left. There is on-site parking.
