St. Clement's Island State Park
Description - St. Clement's Island State Park is an island destination located off the shore of St. Mary's County near the mouth of St. Clement's and Breton Bays in the Potomac River. On March 25, 1634, the first English settlers under the Baltimore proprietorship sailed to St. Clement's Island on the Ark and the Dove using the island as a base camp for further exploration of a permanent settlement. The 40-acre historic park contains a memorial cross built in 1934 dedicated to the memory of the first landing of the Maryland colonists. Accessible only by boat, a remote atmosphere reigns on this tiny public parcel. The park is administered by Point Lookout State Park, Scotland, Maryland.

Created in 1975 and built on its present location in 1984, the St. Clement's Island-Potomac River Museum was established to interpret the history of St. Clement's Island and its surrounding area. The museum is maintained by the St. Mary's County Government resting on the shore of the Potomac River in Colton's Point. Visitors may view hundreds of local artifacts, an early 20th century schoolhouse, relax and dine outdoors in the picnic grove, browse the library or purchase memorabilia from the museum's gift shop.

Attractions - St. Clement's Island is a beautiful day use park for boaters. A small slip provides a pull-up location allowing visitors to hike and picnic the 40-acre Tidewater site. Fishing at the island is almost second nature for locals and visitors alike.

Boat tours to historic St. Clement's Island are offered on a weekend schedule by the Potomac River Museum. The 26-passenger vessel, The Water Taxi II, is fully insured and a certified tour boat by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Water Taxi II leaves the St. Clement's Island-Potomac River Museum on Saturdays and Sundays at 12:30 PM and returns at 2:15 PM. The second voyage begins at 2:30 PM and returns at 3:45 PM. Passengers are welcome to leave on the early boat and return on the last trip.

The Water Taxi II may be chartered by private parties and commercial tours during the daylight hours throughout the week. For additional information, contact the St. Clement's Island-Potomac River Museum at the number listed below. The St. Clement's Island Museum is open March 25 through September from 9 AM to 5 PM weekdays, and noon to 5 PM weekends. From October 1 through March 24 the museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 4 PM. Contact the museum for current admission fees.

St. Clements Island State Park offers no accessible amenities at this time.

Recreation - Outdoor recreations enjoy at this 40-acre park include fishing, hiking, hunting and picnicking.

Climate - Maryland has four distinct seasons with spring and fall being particularly pleasant with low humidity and mild temperatures. The average January temperature ranges between 30 and 34 degrees F (-1 to 1 C) with July averages ranging between 74 degrees F and 80 degrees F. Typically, coastal temperatures are slightly warmer then the western Appalachian Plateau area. Travelers should be aware that winters can become miserably cold and summers can be hazy, hot and humid with afternoon thundershowers.
