Water Sports at Point Lookout State Park
Description - Recreational opportunities abound on this picturesque peninsula formed by the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River. Swimming, fishing, boating and camping are just a few of the activities to be enjoyed in this beautiful bay setting.

This park's peaceful surroundings belie its history as the location of a prison camp which imprisoned as many as 52,264 Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. A museum on site recounts this vivid history.

Attractions - Once the site of a Civil War prison, Point Lookout State Park has over 1,000 acres of waterfront property. Thousands of visitors each year enjoy the beaches, fishing waters, and overnight facilities. There are 143 campsites, 1 youth area, and 6 camper cabins. There is even a rustic cottage located directly on the shore of the Potomac River overlooking Cornfield Harbor near the confluence with the Chesapeake Bay. A visitor center and museum operate seasonally. Three fishing areas include a 24-hour site, fish-cleaning site and 710-foot handicapped accessible fishing pier. The day use area has a guarded swimming beach with grills, picnic tables, children's playground, bathhouse, pavilion, volleyball and horseshoes. Hunters can find 200 acres set aside for them. They must bear valid license and appropriate stamps.

Pets are welcome at the park in designated areas. They are permitted in Malone Circle, the first 4 sites in Tulip, the first 4 sites in Green's Point Loop, on the paved portion causeway and on the beach (north of the causeway) to the entrance of Tanner's Creek. They are NOT permitted in any other day use area or trail, including the beach or picnic area.

Recreation - Recreation abounds at Point Lookout. Opportunities for rest and relaxation are centered on biking, boating, camping, cabin use, fishing, crabbing, paddling, hunting, picnicking and swimming. A boat launch, camp store, dump station are just a sampling of the facilities offered.

Climate - Maryland has four distinct seasons with spring and fall being particularly pleasant with low humidity and mild temperatures. The average January temperature ranges between 30 and 34 degrees F (-1 to 1 C) with July averages ranging between 74 degrees F and 80 degrees F. Typically, coastal temperatures are slightly warmer then the western Appalachian Plateau area. Travelers should be aware that winters can become miserably cold and summers can be hazy, hot and humid with afternoon thundershowers.

Location - Point Lookout State Park is at the southern tip of St. Mary's County, at the junction of the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. It can be reached via Maryland Route 5.
