Appalachian Trail - Maine- The Appalachian Trail is a footpath of more than 2,150 miles with 276 miles lying in Maine. The renowned Hundred Mile Wilderness falls within Maine.
Bigelow Preserve Public Reserved Land- Bigelow Preserve encompasses 35,000 acres including the entire Bigelow Mountain Range and nearly 20 miles of the southern shore of Flagstaff Lake.
Carlton Pond WPA- Established November 24, 1965, Carlton Pond WPA is the only Waterfowl Production Area in Region 5. Purchased with funds from the sale of duck stamps, the area is open for hunting, trapping, fishing and other public uses.
Dead River Public Reserved Land- Dead River encompasses several miles of shore on Flagstaff Lake and the first few miles of the Dead River after it leaves the lake. Visitors enjoy remote camping and fishing at the lake and river.
Fort Halifax State Historic Site- Fort Halifax, built in 1754, was the oldest blockhouse in the United States before it was destroyed during the flood of 1987. A reconstructed blockhouse, which incorporates many timbers from the 1754 blockhouse, stands on the fort's original site.
Holeb Public Reserved Land- Holeb has a recreational use dominated by the Moose River "Bow Trip," long popular among canoeists and fishermen. Most of the shores on Attean and Holeb Ponds lie within the unit's boundaries.
Little Squaw Public Reserved Land- Little Squaw is a 15,000-acre unit that includes Big and Little Squaw Mountains and several remote ponds that offer excellent hiking, camping, fishing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.
Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge- Sunkhaze Meadows NWR encompasses the second largest peat bog in Maine. Peat deposits, up to 18 feet thick in places, were at one time threatened by development.

General Information

Description - The Kennebec and Moose River Valley Region is characterized by fishing villages located along beautiful deep cool northern lakes and waterways. Cabin resort areas offer summer vacationers a relaxing visit at a fraction of ordinary vacation costs. Whitewater boating, fishing, paddling on peaceful streams and lakes, and viewing wildlife are the main attractions.

Attractions - The Kennebec and Moose River Valleys offers a wide variety of outdoor recreation opportunities. The area is known for its challenging Bigelow Mountain Range or Pleasant Pond Mountain, both lie on the Appalachian Trail. World-class whitewater boating spans three seasons and over 200 miles of groomed trails offer year-round exploration.

Recreation - Augusta, the capitol of Maine lies within this region. The small city offers a metropolitan atmosphere to what is otherwise a northern fishing, hiking and whitewater excursion area. Peaceful villages are found outside the capitol throughout what is known as some of the country's best moose viewing territory. In addition, the Appalachian Trail traverses some of its most difficult trail here.

Climate - Winter outdoor enthusiasts to the Kennebec and Moose River Valleys Region will find daytime temperatures in the northern area averaging 10 - 14 degrees Fahrenheit (-12 to -10 Celsius). In the southern area they will find winter temperatures averaging 14 - 18 degrees Fahrenheit (-10 to -8 Celsius). Summer brings cool, bright days with temperatures in the northern area averaging between 65 - 66 degrees Fahrenheit (18 - 19 Celsius) and in the southern area, averaging between 66 - 68 (19 - 20 Celsius). The region receives an average of 38 - 44 inches (97 - 112 centimeters) of precipitation each year.

Location - Encircled by other regions including Western Mountains, Mid Coast and Katahdin. Quebec, Canada lies to the northwest as does a tip of Aroostook County.
