Description - Fort Halifax, built in 1754, was the oldest blockhouse in the United States before it was destroyed during the flood of 1987. A reconstructed blockhouse, which incorporates many timbers from the 1754 blockhouse, stands on the fort's original site at the confluence of the Kennebec and Sebasticook Rivers in Winslow. Fort Halifax was built at this strategic location to protect English colonial settlements along the Kennebec and was garrisoned from 1754-1766.

Recreation - Viewing a reconstructed war blockhouse is enjoyed each year from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Viewing the confluence of Kennebec and Sebasticook Rivers is beautiful. Climate - Winter outdoor enthusiasts to the Kennebec and Moose River Valleys Region will find daytime temperatures in the northern area averaging 10 - 14 degrees Fahrenheit (-12 to -10 Celsius). In the southern area they will find winter temperatures averaging 14 - 18 degrees Fahrenheit (-10 to -8 Celsius). Summer brings cool, bright days with temperatures in the northern area averaging between 65 - 66 degrees Fahrenheit (18 - 19 Celsius) and in the southern area, averaging between 66 - 68 (19 - 20 Celsius).
