Description - Bald Mountain is a popular hiking destination. The area is characterized by a mixed forest of hardwood and pine. A short trail leads visitors to the bald summit ledges, offering superb views of the Rangeley Lakes.

- Bald Mountain Public Reserved Land rests within Franklin County on the western side of the state in Western Maine Mountains Region. Framed by Mountain Road and SR 17, the large isthmus separates Mooselookmeguntic Lake and Rangeley Lake. The focal point of the land is the centrally located dominant rise, Bald Mountain, elevation 2,443 feet.
Recreation - The Bald Mountain Public Reserve Land offers 1,873 acres for snowmobiling, wildlife and scenic viewing and the popular hiking trail, Bald Mountain Trail. The trail has a gentle climb through an engaging forest leading to open ledges offering superb views of the Rangeley Lakes. This hike is recommended for families than can endure a 1,000-foot elevation gain. It is approximately 1 mile one-way and follows an orange and red blaze. Hikers will discover several side trails branching off from the summit. Anglers will want to note that a boat launch exists along the northern edge of the land on SR 4 in Mountain view. This site gives access to Rangeley Lakes that supports a thriving population trout and landlocked salmon. Nearby is Rangeley Lakes State Park offering 691 acres of beautiful inland scenery. Visitors enjoy camping, hiking, picnicking, wildlife viewing, nature photography, swimming, boating and fishing access. Hunting and trapping are allowed, subject to state rules and regulations. Climate - The Western Maine Mountains Region, known for its spectacular four seasons, sees average daytime winter temperatures ranging 10 - 14 degrees Fahrenheit (-12 to -10 Celsius) in the northern area and an average of 14 -18 degrees Fahrenheit (-10 to -8 Celsius) in the southern area. Summer unfolds for outdoors enthusiasts with temperatures in the northern area averaging 66 degrees Fahrenheit (19 Celsius) and in the southern area averaging 68 (20 Celsius). Western Maine Mountains Region experiences a wide range of precipitation.
