Fresh Water Pond, Ferry Beach State Park
Description - Located east of the populated cities of Biddeford and Saco, Ferry Beach State Park offers an opportunity for great ocean views. Unique to the area and rare at this latitude is a stand of tupelo (black gum) trees.

Attractions - Long before highways were common north of Boston, beaches provided travelers relatively safe and easy transportation routes. A ferry crossing at nearby Saco River served beach travelers, and thus Ferry Beach State Park received its name. Like many of the parks in Maine, Ferry Beach is a beautiful park offering swimming, picnicking and fishing from Memorial Day through October 1st. Trails are open in the winter for cross-country skiing. Unique to the area, particularly at the latitude level, is a stand of black gum trees. Guided nature programs explain more about this phenomenon.

Recreation - Ferry Beach State Park's natural landscape is composed of hardwoods, swamp, dunes and beach. To venture beyond the park's boundaries is to discover roads, houses, backyards and even a shooting range. Ocean pleasures including swimming, clam digging, surf fishing and combing the shoreline for shells. The visitor is urged to become familiar with the park trail system before venturing out . Trails are color coded on the trail sign at the edge of the parking area and on the sign posts along the trails. There are several loops and combinations of walks one may take to discover the park's varied habitats. Trails are open to the public year-round; however, signs are removed during late fall, winter and early spring for storage and maintenance. A small fresh water lake offers rustic seating and an opportunity to fish. The park is relatively primitive in terms of facilities. A drinking fountain and pit toilet is available.

Climate - The year-round vacation spot of the Southern Maine Coast Region experiences daytime winter temperatures above 18 degrees Fahrenheit (-8 Celsius). Similar to the Greater Portland and Mid Coast Regions, summer daytime temperatures average a pleasant 68 degrees (20 Celsius) or slightly above. The region receives an average of 40 - 44 inches (102 - 112 centimeters) of precipitation each year.

Location - Off Maine Route 9 on Bay View Road between Old Orchard Beach and Camp Ellis in Saco.
