Hayes State Park

Hayes State Park is one of the system's oldest state parks. Dedicated in 1920's, the park originally was named Cedar Hill State Park. The name changed when the Hayes family donated land to the park with the condition that it be renamed to honor Walter J. Hayes, a Michigan senator. The park has gone through many changes, but the major constant has been the attraction of Michigan's visitors to the recreational waters of Wamplers Lake.

Attractions - Playground - These play areas offer a variety of playground equipment for children. Smaller playground located in campground.

Beach House - Provides clothes-changing area for swimmers.

Fishing
Anglers can find bluegill, sunfish, crappie, pike, muskie, smallmouth bass and largemouth bass in Wampler's Lake. During the winter, ice fishing is the park's primary activity.

Recreation - For automobile and speed lovers, the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn is a short drive from the park. Stage Coach Stop, USA, a local theme park, is also within miles of the park. Other local activities include miniature golfing and antique shopping along U.S. 12.

Climate - This state normally experiences mild summers with average temperatures near 70 to 80 degrees F. Nights can be cool in the northern reaches of the state with lows dipping near 50 degrees F. August and September are the wettest months on average. Fall temperatures begin to cool in mid September, which brings a spectacular fall foliage color change. Days are crisp and nights chilly during this time of year. Winters can be brutal in Michigan with lake-effect snows bringing 200 inches of snow to some areas in the Upper Peninsula. Spring reaches the southern regions of the state in late March and a few weeks later in the north. This time of year is also very wet with snow melt and spring rains.

Location - Entrance on US-12 9 miles West of Clinton, 4 miles East of M-50, M124 cuts directly through the middle of the park
