Woodland Beauty
Description - Fisherman's Island State Park was first recognized as having great state park potential in 1936. By the mid 1970s this 2,678-acre island park was officially preserved for public enjoyment. Highlights of the large parcel include a 2.5-mile road along the Lake Michigan shoreline with extensive rolling dunes covered by a variety of hardwoods including aspen, cedar and black spruce. Another renowned natural feature of the park is the three trout streams located within its boundaries.

Attractions - Five miles of undeveloped shoreline afford visitors the opportunity to sightsee, hike amid the rolling dunes and enjoy a large mile-long swimming beach with expansive picnic ground. Tables and grills provided.

Anglers can test their skill at three different trout streams found within the park boundaries.

The park permits camping from April 1 to December 1. There are 90 rustic campsites available.

Seven miles of trails are open year-round. Cross-country skiers should note that trails are not groomed in winter.

Hunting is allowed throughout the park during the regular hunting seasons, except for a 450-foot safety zone around occupied dwellings and the campgrounds.

Recreation - Fisherman's Island State Park offers a rustic campground, hiking areas, swimming beach, picnic area, nature study, and cross-country skiing. Trails are not groomed in winter.

Climate - Northern Michigan normally experiences mild summers with average temperatures around 70 degrees F (21 degrees C). Winter temperatures average 14 - 22 degrees F (-10 to -6 degrees C). Yearly rain and snowmelt in the region averages 28 - 36 inches but can be dramatically altered by the "lake effect," thus depositing significant amounts of snow within a short period of time causing hazardous road conditions.

Location - Fishermen's Island State Park is located a mile or so west of Charlevoix along the shores of Lake Michigan. Take US-31 south of Charlevoix and turn west on Bells Bay Road to reach the park entrance.

Report: the week we were there in August, it was cold, windy, and rainy..and all at the campground came down with poison ivy except 2 of us. the best day was the last day as it was the only warm day we had. The weather did make for some great sunsets though. photos available on my yahoo profile Master_Stealer_Of_Souls31
