American Black Bear, Euarctos americanus
Description - Thompson's Harbor State Park is a remote and scenic site situated in the northeastern area of the Lower Peninsula. Nestled between the glorious shores of Lake Huron and the dense woodlands of Mackinaw State Forest, this park remains undeveloped enhancing bald eagle, black bear, coyote, and white-tailed deer populations. Limestone cobble beaches exhibit fossilized remains of plants and wildlife.

Attractions - Situated along seven and a half miles of Lake Huron shoreline, this undeveloped park provides a rustic retreat for hikers exploring the park's six miles of trails. The park is adjacent to the Presque Isle Harbor. Park roads are undeveloped; call ahead for driving conditions. No services.

Recreation - No developed facilities available. Six miles of trails provide access to hunting grounds and shoreline fishing. Wildlife viewing and nature study are pursued as well. Trails are open to hikers, cross-country skiers, and snowmobilers.

Climate - The Straits normally experiences mild summers with average temperatures around 70 degrees F (21 degrees C). Winter temperatures average 14 - 18 degrees F (-10 to -8 degrees C). Yearly rain and snowmelt in the region averages 28 - 36 inches but can be dramatically altered by the "lake effect," thus depositing significant amounts of snow within a short period of time causing hazardous road conditions.

Location - Thompson's Harbor State Park is adjacent to the Presque Isle harbor about 24 miles north of Alpena, off US-23 North.
