Attractions
- Mississippi contains the largest portion of the Natchez Trace Parkway, an All-American Road which leads from Natchez, across the state of Mississippi, cutting across the corner of Alabama, and on to Nashville, Tennessee. The Parkway tells the story of people on the move, the story of the age-old need to get from one place to another. It is a story of Natchez, Chickasaw, and Choctaw Indians following traditional ways of life, of French and Spanish people venturing into a new world, and of people building a new nation. Mississippi's other byways include the Country Music Trail, the Great River Road, Hospitality Highway, and the Rock & Roll Highway.
Recreation - Byways provide access to numerous cultural, historical, natural, recreational and scenic sites. Some of the most popular activities along the byways include hiking, camping, picnicking, biking, fishing, photographing scenery, viewing historic sites and of course scenic driving. Climate - Mississippi lies mainly in the subtropics. The climate is mild with the coldest months experiencing low temperatures near 40 degrees F. Summer temperatures frequently reach 100 degrees F, with coastal breezes providing cooling relief. Humidity is highest in August and September reaching an average close to 90%. The highest rainfall comes during the spring months, but December and January are wet, too. Expect temperatures in the northeastern hills region to be somewhat cooler than the rest of the state. Location -
Byways travel through scenic and historic areas throughout the state. Maps are available on the wildernet page describing each scenic byway.
