Kerr Lake State Recreation Area- Whether you are searching for quiet relaxation or exhilarating water sports, Kerr Lake State Recreation Area can fulfill that desire.
Medoc Mountain State Park- Canoe the creeks or hike the trails to appreciate the beauty of this unusual mixture of plant and animal life. Not really a mountain, but a granite ridge of 325 feet, Medoc Mountain is the remains of an ancient mountain range formed by volcanic action. A rewarding experience in all seasons, especially in the spring when the bluffs and ravines are covered with the blossoms of mountain laurel. This beautiful spot is within an 1 1/2 hours drive from Research Triangle.
Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge- The refuge includes forested wetlands in the lower 130 miles of the Roanoke River from the fall line at Weldon, NC downstream to the Albemarle Sound near Plymouth, NC.

Description - The Roanoke Rapids area provides a doorway from the north. Located on the eastern Virginia and North Carolina state lines and along I-95, Roanoke Rapids has millions of people pass by its town each year. The area rests on the eastern shores of Lake Gaston and Roanoke Rapids Lake.

Recreation - The area offers ample opportunity for power boating and bass fishing on Lake Gaston. In addition, lakeside campsite are available along with shoreline fishing. There is plenty of opportunity to sunbathe, swim or water-ski on the nearby lake. Kerr Lake Recreation Area offers hiking, camping and picnicking. Medoc Mountain State Park is just a few minutes away offering many of the usual park amenities.

Climate - Winter daytime temperatures range between 36 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit (2 to 4 Celsius). Summer daytime temperatures range between 76 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit (24 to 26 Celsius). The state has a fairly wet climate with an average precipitation for this area averaging 44-48 inches (112-122 centimeters).
