Villanueva State Park
Description - Villanueva State Park is a charming riverside park situated in a canyon of red and yellow
sandstone cliffs. Towering cottonwoods and a variety of other native trees and shrubs add
additional color to the landscape.

The park, which sits at an altitude of 5,600 feet, is comprised of 1,600 acres of land. Park amenities include a visitor center, group shelter, a playground, restrooms, and showers. Camping facilities include 28 developed sites, many with electric hookup, and an RV dump station.

Attractions - The park's adobe-style picnic shelters were designed and grouped to resemble a Spanish hamlet, similar to those that existed in the area in earlier times. A footbridge gives hikers access to trails leading along the river to other sites, including a prehistoric Indian ruin and a cliff-top vantage point.

Recreation - Recreational opportunities include camping, picnicking, fishing, and hiking the area trails.

Climate - Annual precipitation is 14.2 inches. Summer temperatures range from lows around 52 to highs around 89. Winter temps range from lows of 22 degrees to highs around 53.

Location - Villanueva State Park is located in the east-central region of the state, just south of Las Vegas, NM on State Highway 3.

Report: Arrived on a Sunday in late August and there were many people using the day use area. All were well behaved as you would hope. This is a very nice park for short hikes and having lunch by the river. Very scenic and the park employees were friendly and helpful. We camped for the night and had a very quiet restful sleep. The campsites are situated on a hill with nice New Mexico views. The nearby town of Villanueva is also interesting and friendly. I highly recommend this park. Jeff Lunt
