Central Nevada

Attractions - This area is often referred to as Pony Express Territory because U.S. Hwy. 50 parallels the historic Pony Express route. One of the most popular of the attractions in this area is Great Basin National Park, spanning over 77,000 acres of wilderness. Lahontan State Recreation area includes a sixteen-mile-long reservoir offering plenty of water based recreation. Fort Churchill State Historic Site preserves an historic military garrison, established in 1860 to protect white settlers from Native American uprisings. Other interesting historic sites in the area include Berlin Ichthyosaur State Park, Belmont Courthouse and the Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Site. Additional Central Nevada attractions include the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge, Lehman Caves, Lahontan State Recreation Area, Cave Lake State Park and much more.

Recreation - This large area offers a wide variety of recreation opportunities. Some of the most popular include touring, scenic driving, viewing the historic towns and sites, hiking, backpacking, camping, fishing, boating, horseback riding, mountain biking, hunting, and simply enjoying the solitude of one of the least populated areas in the country.

Climate - The area's climate is typical of northern Nevada's desert country. Rainfall is slight, averaging less than 6 inches annually. Clear, sunny skies are the rule, with summer daytime temperatures peaking near 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Winters can be very cold with temperatures dipping below zero occasionally. Snowfall is common and can be heavy in the higher elevations.

Location - This area spans the center of Nevada, straddling U.S. Hwy. 50. The primary towns in this region include Baker, Ely, Eureka, Austin, Fallon and Silver Springs.
