General Information

Description - Ward Charcoal Ovens is known for its six historic charcoal ovens. These beehive-shaped ovens were used in the late 19th century to generate charcoal for use in the mines of nearby Ward. The park offers some outstanding geologic features. Willow Creek, just north of the ovens, is fed by spring clusters in the mountains to the west. This perennial stream provides plentiful fish habitat.

Attractions - This historic and unique site at present does not have fully developed facilities. It does offer picnic tables and grills but water is not available. Other features include forested woodlands, lush riparian areas and outstanding views of the Steptoe Valley and surrounding mountains. The park offers some outstanding geologic features. Willow Creek, just north of the ovens, is fed by spring clusters in the mountains to the west. This perennial stream provides plentiful fish habitat.

Recreation - The park offers opportunities to view the historic charcoal ovens, picnic, fish, hike, enjoy nature, and view the scenery.

Climate - Seasonal temperatures vary greatly at the park, from hot summers to cold winters. Summer temperatures can reach 90 degrees during the day, with winter daytime temperatures only about 40 degrees.

Location - To visit Ward Charcoal Ovens drive seven miles south from Ely on U.S. Highways 6-50-93, then eleven miles southwest on Cave Valley Road. Cave Valley Road is a graded dirt road, accessible by passenger vehicles May through October.

Directions from Ely: Travel seven miles south on U.S. Highways 6-50-93, then eleven miles southwest on Cave Valley Road.
