Jones Beach State Park

Description - Historically a fishing and farming region, this 118 mile stretch of urban land offers three State Historic Sights, over a dozen State Parks, the Fire Island National Seashore, wildlife refuges, championship golf courses, lush vineyards and fabulous sunbathing beaches. Visitors may be surprised to know that the snowy owl makes annual visitations to this region. Look for it along fence posts resting above the ocean's sandy beaches where it might be keeping an eye out for dead fish washed ashore. Outdoor enthusiasts will also find 50 miles of multi-use trails open year-round to hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians and cross-country skiers. This region also houses many stunning palatial mansions, a national laboratory science museum and at the far east end of the island, a park where the visitor may be fortunate enough to see sights of harbor seals and whales.

Recreation - Visitors to Long Island Travel Region are treated to an assortment of outdoor recreation. There are historic sites where the visitor may view employees strolling about in period costumes, wonderful paddleboating in both salt and fresh water, golfing at championship courses, using over 50 miles of multi-use trails, picnicking oceanside and swimming in the Great North Atlantic. Wintertime visitors will find many miles of trail open for cross-country skiing. Climate - The Long Island Travel Region experiences average January temperatures above 22 degrees Fahrenheit (above -6 degrees Celsius). Summer temperatures average above 72 degrees Fahrenheit (above 22 degrees Celsius). Precipitation in the region ranges from 40 to more than 44 inches of rain and snowmelt.
