Clarence Fahnestock State Park
Description - Clarence Fahnestock State Park's pride is Canopus Beach, a multimillion dollar facility with a large, sandy beach, a concession stand, showers and picnic area. Located in the highlands of Putnam County, the park has individual and group campsites. Boating and fishing are popular pastimes at the two lakes and four ponds. Multi-use trails are available year-round and access to the Appalachian Trail is available. Fahnestock Winter Park offers a wide range of winter sports.

Attractions - Clarence Fahnestock State Park's pride is Canopus Beach, a multimillion dollar facility with a large, sandy beach, a concession stand, showers and a picnic area. Located in the highlands of Putnam County, the park has campsites, and group wilderness camping facilities as well. Fishing is excellent, with two lakes and four ponds for anglers seeking bass, perch, pickerel or trout. Boating, miles of bridle paths, hiking, biking, cross-country ski, snowmobile and nature trails--including a portion of the Appalachian Trail--are available to visitors. Fahnestock Winter Park activities include ice skating, ice fishing, snowshoeing and sledding.

Recreation - Clarence Fahnestock State Park offers a fabulous swimming beach, bike paths, hiking trails, a bridle path, a boat launch site, individual camping, wilderness group camping, a nature trail, picnic area including pavilions, recreation programs and showers. Numerous winter activities include snowshoeing, ice fishing, ice skating, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snow tubing. The park is open year-round. Bow hunting for deer is permitted in season. There is a short season for hunting spring turkey. Camping season runs from May to mid-December.

Climate - The Clarence Fahnestock State Park area has a varied climate with average January temperatures ranging from above 22 degrees down to 18 degrees Fahrenheit (above -6 degrees Celsius). Summer temperatures average around 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 degrees Celsius). Precipitation in the region ranges from 40 to more than 44 inches of rain and snowmelt.

Location - Clarence Fahnestock State Park is located along SR 301 just west of the Taconic Parkway. The park is approximately 10-15 miles east of the Hudson River.

Report: Dry conditions on back trails- good for early morning hikes. Bugs around lakes not to bad. Many nice spots for stopping/lunch. Bring sketch book there are many nice spots for drawing/pastels. Great place to see effects of glaciation/retreat and other neat stuff for rock hounds to investagate. Local mining history interesting.

Report: Weekend of 4/20 - 2004. Opened the season as usual to unusually warm temperatures which happened to bring out some very rare wildlife. Overall great experience and great memories with great friends.

Report: Cross Country Skiing, Snow Shoeing Hiking, Biking. Live nearby and really enjoy the trails and beauty in this under utilized park.
