Mills Mansion State Historic Site
Description - A combination of European grandeur and American heritage makes Mills Mansion a quintessential American Renaissance building. The mansion has been restored to its turn-of-the-century fashion when financial and industrial leaders formulated the Gilded Age. Tours of the 1896 site include 65 rooms, 14 bathrooms, a lavishly decorated interior with fabulous 17th and 18th century French features. The site is open for touring April through October and special dates in December.

Attractions - Mills Mansion is an elegant example of the great estates built by America's financial and industrial leaders during the Gilded Age. This period, also known as the American Renaissance, lasted approximately from 1876 to 1917, and was marked by America's rapid economic growth and emergence as a world power.

In 1894, Ogden Mills, & his wife, Ruth Livingston Mills, commissioned the prestigious New York City architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White to remodel and enlarge their Staatsburg home. At its completion in 1896, the house was transformed into a Beaux-Arts mansion of 65 rooms and 14 bathrooms. The interior was lavishly decorated, mostly in the styles of 17th- and 18th century France. The completed mansion retained many architectural features of the earlier house, which had been Ruth Livingston Mills's childhood home. Pride in family heritage was also demonstrated in the prominent display of portraits of Mrs. Mills's ancestors.

It is this combination of a taste for European grandeur with a reverence for American heritage that makes Mills Mansion a quintessential American Renaissance building. Visitors to Mills Mansion will notice the restoration of the mansion, both inside and out, and its environs to their turn-of-the-century appearance.

Recreation - Mills Mansion offers biking and hiking trails that may be used for cross-country skiing in winter. A gift shop, group tours, picnic area, scenic views and interpretive signs are offered.
