Report: While stationed at Plattsburgh AFB eight or so miles south of the park in the late 80s, we visited Point Au Roche frequently, enjoying its nature trails, wetlands and bay fishing. We visited the park again in late April and again in July of 2006 and were not disappointed either time. In April, hundreds of white trilliums were flowering along one of the paths on Long Point. And other trilliums were found on Short Point. Offshore, common loons were easily seen on our April visit as they staged for the rest of their migrations to lakes to the north and east, especially in Maine. Point Au Roche's trails are varied in length and are all easy to moderate in difficulty. We prefer to start our visits at the nature center, which is located on the base of Long Point, rather than the more developed area around Short Point. Visitors in the warm months are rewarded by mature forests, fields of grass and shrubs that are hotspots for butterflies, especially monarchs. Most any spot on Long Point (especially) is good for a picnic. Watch for ticks, although we've not picked up any in the park.
