General Information

Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site
Copyright: - New York State Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation
Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site
Description - The Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation currently manages 152 parks, 35 historic sites and 27 golf courses from which to enjoy a wide variety of recreational activities. Whitewater boating at Letchworth State Park, hiking in Allegany State Park, viewing the fabulous Mills Mansion or feeling the thrill from the thunderous waters of Niagara Falls is just the emergence of what visitors discover in New York State Parks.

Attractions - New York offers astounding public lands including the Revolutionary War site of Washington's Headquarters, rock climbing walls at Minnewaska, the coastal fort of Old Fort Niagara, New York City's Riverbank ball diamond, spectacular scenery and whitewater adventures at Letchworth State Park, rocky shores and trophy fishing in the Thousand Islands and the home of the 2002 U.S. Open at Bethpage Golf Course. This and much more is administered by New York's Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation who entertains million of new and return visitors each year.

Recreation - New York State Parks provide all forms of recreation including viewing spectacular scenery, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, boating, picnicking, paddling sports, camping, group retreats, historical sites, championship golf courses, ice skating, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and much more.

Climate - New York experiences four distinct seasons, with spring and fall being the most pleasant times to travel through the region. Humidity in the southeastern areas of the state can make summer travel uncomfortable, although many festivals and special events occur during that season. Summer highs in the lower elevations of New York usually don't surpass 90 degrees F. Thunderstorms occur a few times a week and can bring needed relief from the heat.

During the fall and spring humidity levels drop with temperatures and make for pleasantly mild traveling weather. Fall brings brilliant color changes in the leaves and spring bring blooming flowers to all regions of the state.

Winter travel can be hazardous as the western portion of the state receives extreme amounts of snow. Debilitating ice storms hit the southeastern portion of the state as often as snow. Although the major highways are usually clear soon after snow, in time to reach the ski resorts in northern New York.

Location - The Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation manages land and sites throughout the state with the exception of public lands in Catskill Forest Preserve and Adirondack Forest Preserve.
