General Information

Description - As New York's newest park, this beautiful 15,280-acre parcel comprises a deep-forest habitat including a large watershed serving millions of nearby residents. This lovely park is home to a variety of wildlife including migratory and resident raptors and songbirds, white-tailed deer, black bear, fox and much more. This land also houses rare invertebrates and plants and is home to the 1,400-acre Doris Duck Wildlife Sanctuary. Limited outdoor recreation includes hiking trails, fishing lake, recreation programs and an array of winter sports.

Attractions - Located in the Palisades / Catskill Travel Region, New York's newest park rests within a densely populated area offering wonderful outdoor recreation opportunities amid a forest of lovely mixed hardwoods and a large watershed used for millions. Many resident and migratory raptors and songbirds inhabit the deep woods. In addition, rare invertebrates and plants live at this 15,280-acre natural refuge. Approximately 1,400 acres have recently been acquired and set aside as the Doris Duck Wildlife Sanctuary.

Recreation - This wonderful new park offers a boat launch site, hiking trails, hunting and fishing opportunities, recreation programs and winter sports including ice skating, cross-country skiing, ice fishing and snowshoeing. The facility is open year-round from dawn to dusk. Hunting is permitted by permit only.

Climate - The Sterling Forest State Park area experiences average January temperatures above 22 degrees Fahrenheit (above -6 degrees Celsius). Summer temperatures average around 72 degrees Fahrenheit (around 22 degrees Celsius). Precipitation in the region ranges from 40 to more than 44 inches of rain and snowmelt. The central Catskills receive the highest precipitation.

Location - The park's visitor center and park entrance is located along SR 17 just south of SR 17A in Tuxedo, NY.
